The accumulator serves in the smg hydraulic system as oil reservoir. A piston in the accumulator seperates the nitrogen filling from the hydraulic oil. The preload pressure of the filling shall be about 39 bar in new condition. At a growing age the preload losses pressure. Is this under 29 bar, the accumulator must be replaced.

If there is now BMW-tester available for testing the preload pressure, you can use a diagnostic software which can display the current pressure of the hydraulic system. Important: Please be sure that the hydraulic oil temperature has 20°C (if not please run the vehicle until it has reached the correct temperature).
  • As soon as you can see the system pressure you can remove the smg relay with the consequence that the electric motor will no longer be actuated.
  • Now you can see the slowly falling system pressure. Remain attentive when the value reaches 39 bar. Notice the last shown pressure valve before the system pressure falls rapid. This is the current preload pressure of the nitrogen filling.

 

Proportional pressure valve (gear 1, 3, 5 (A); gear 2, 4, 6 (D))

The two proportional pressure valves supply in each case a side of the shift travel cylinder with hydraulic oil. For the foward and the backward movement one side gets pressure from a solenoid valve and the other one leds the back the oil that is displaced by the piston of the cylinder.

Proportional direction valve (clutch (B); selector angle (C))

The two propotional direction valve from the hydraulic unit supply the slave clyinder od the clutch and the cylinder of the selection angle. There are three positions:

  1. pressure reduction: There are no clutch operation or gear shifting in progress. Bloth cylinders are connected with the expansion tank.
  2. pressure increase: While shifting or clutch operation, oil from the accumulator flow to the cylinders. The solenoid valves need about 1,1 to 2 amp.
  3. holding pressure: If the selector shaft has reached its position or clutch is to be disengaged, the oil pressure is kept.

Electric motor

The 12 V electric motor drives the hydraulic pump in the hydraulic unit and is actuated by the SMG relay, as soon as the minimal limit of the hydraulic pressure is reached. This limit and the maximum pressure valve for the shutdown of the electric motor are flexible and are always depenting on the temperature of the hydraulic oil. The warmer the hydraulic temperature, the higher the switch-off pressure will be.

Pressure relief valve

The pressure relief valve is fixed in the hydraulic unit and serves as safety element for the hole system. If the pressure rises up to 100 bar because of a failture the valve opens and connects the suction and the pressure sides of the hydraulic pump.

Hydraulic pump

The hydraulic pump is a external thoothed gear pump which is powered by the 12 V electric motor and builds up the required system pressure.

Temperature sensor

A NTC temperature sensor fixed in the hydraulic unit controls the hydraulic temperature. (-30 °C -> 26114 Ω; 130 °C -> 89 Ω)

Pressure sensor

A pressure sensor fixed in the hydraulic unit controls the hydraulic pressure. (0,5 V -> 0 bar; 4,58 V -> 100 bar)
