Panic attacks caused by traffic jams and stop-and-go operations during hot summerdays?
With the Burkhart Engineering Repair Kit you get your SMG hydraulic unit (BMW-partnumber: 21 53 2 229 715 / 2153229715) ready for summer again.
Do you get i.a. following codes stored in your error memory?
- 53 (0x35) low level of pressure reached HE
- 55 (0x37) Switching-on frequency of hydraulic unit
- 56 (0x38) Switching-on time of hydraulic unit
- 57 (0x39) Misuse of hydraulic unit
In most cases this is caused by a worn electric motor, which drives the hydraulic pump in the SMG unit. Further the gap leakage in the hydraulic system increase massively during high temperatures. If additionally many hydraulic consumers are working (clutch slave cylinder and gearbox actuator), the hydraulic unit no longer produces enough pressure. Therefore we have developed our Burkhart Engineering High Performance Hydraulic Oil. The pump runs on pressure up to 25% faster than using the conventional Pentosin CHF 11s.
Here the direct comparison:

The pump motor may be responsible for following faults:
- SMG gearbox warning light lights up
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)/engine check lights up
- SMG dropping out of gear
- not possible to engage gears anymore
Scope of delivery:
- brand new replacement motor for SMG 2 (12 month warranty)
- brand new temperature sensor for SMG 2
- High Performance Hydraulic Oil for SMG 2
- High Performance Grease
The old motor can be replaced by the new one "plug&play". The replacement motor ist equipped with the required pins and seals and can be directly installed in the original cable harness. These are brand new spare parts in OEM quality. The alternative to save you from buying a new SMG hydraulic unit.
The required release tool is also available in our shop.
The removal and installation is discribed in the following video:

The Repair-Kit only works if the rest of the hydraulic unit is functional. The accumulator for example needs a defined preload pressure. Should this not be the case, the accumulator has to be replaced, too. In our SMG-Wiki you can find an instruction how to check the preload pressure in the accumulator.
***INSTALLATION NOTE*** The hydraulic pump should not be run before being installed in the hydraulic unit. Doing so causes extreme stress on the pump and may void the warranty. It is recommended that the pump not be removed after being installed as it sits very tight in the hydraulic unit and can be damaged when being removed.
